Could this night get any stranger?

Jack could barely believe his eyes. When Paige had dumped a heavy stack of books and papers onto one of the bookshelves the entire panel had swung open to reveal a hidden room behind it. It was like something out of a scary movie or a Gothic novel except that it was real.

“You knew about this, right? I mean, before you bought the house? You knew this was here.”

“Not a clue, although I can’t say I’m unhappy about it. I’ve always wanted a house with a secret passageway. I just thought I’d have to build my own.”

“You bought a house with a hidden room. Only you, Paige. Only you.”

“I’m going to take that as a compliment.”

Reaching into his pocket, he pulled out his phone and flipped on the flashlight.

“Should I look for a light switch? I know you’re going to want to explore this right now and not wait for tomorrow morning.”

She looked at him as if he was crazy.

“Of course, I’m going to look inside. This is the coolest thing that’s ever happened to me. Why on earth would I wait until morning? Could you wait? Seriously, don’t you want to know what this is?”

He did, but he was cautious by nature, probably because of his career experiences. The room was shrouded in shadow and darkness, and he could only make out a few odd shapes here and there.

“I do,” he said, shining his flashlight onto the walls next to the doorway. “Here we are. A switch. Let’s see if these lights work.”

He flipped one switch which did nothing and then a second which flooded the room with light from an overhead chandelier. There were also two windows in the room, but the shades were pulled and the curtains drawn. No moonlight was going to leak through.

There didn’t appear to be a vampire, mummy, or ax murderer hiding anywhere so he stepped back so Paige could have a better look. Slowly she entered, her gaze ricocheting around the room to take it all in. It was a small room, probably not more than twelve by twelve. Most of the furniture was covered with sheets and the wallpaper was old and faded but there was a desk in the middle of the room stacked with papers and books.

“It looks like an office,” she finally said. “Do you think it was Edgar’s?”

“The furniture style looks too feminine for it to be Edgar’s. Perhaps this belonged to the missus?” He pointed to the far side of the room. “There’s a door over there. Should we see where it leads?”

“Absolutely,” she said, bounding forward. “I’m trying to orient myself as to what would be on the other side of that wall. I think it’s a bedroom but I’m not sure.”

“Easy,” he said, capturing her arm. “Why don’t I go first? Just in case.”

“Do you think someone or something is going to jump out at us? You’ve watched too many horror movies.”

“Probably not as many as you have. And I’m just being cautious.
